What is Chronic Stress?

From a Functional Holistic Health, Wellness & Life Coaching Perspective!

Chronic Stress is an underestimated and overlooked topic blending into the lifestyle, the mindset, the body, and the environments we are living in contributing to Metabolic Chaos®

Stephanie Pagnol-Palpacuer ~ "What is Chronic Stress?"

How are you feeling?

The world we live in today is very different from the one many of us knew just a few decades ago. Our daily lives also differ greatly from those of previous generations.

Smartphones, demanding schedules, consumerism, social media, 24-hour news, online information, advertising, and constant communication have become part of everyday life. While modern advances in technology, science, medicine, and hygiene have improved many aspects of our lives, they have also introduced new sources of stimulation and pressure.

Earlier generations often lived at a slower pace and were more connected to nature, the seasons, and their local communities. Their daily lives generally included less technology and fewer sources of continuous information and stimulation. Food was more often prepared from basic, whole ingredients, and many traditional cultures used plants and other natural practices to support well-being.

Our bodies, however, still respond to stress through ancient survival mechanisms. In the past, the fight-or-flight response may have been activated by an immediate physical threat, such as a wild animal. Today, the same response may be triggered by work demands, financial concerns, relationship challenges, social expectations, information overload, environmental factors, and other ongoing pressures.

Stress is a normal and unavoidable part of life. The concern arises when the body experiences repeated or prolonged stress without enough time to recover. Physical, emotional, mental, and environmental demands may all be interpreted by the body as signals requiring protection, activating stress hormones and other physiological responses.

From a functional wellness perspective, it is helpful to consider the many stressors that may influence the body - not just one isolated concern. Lifestyle habits, emotional experiences, environmental exposures, nutrition, mindset, and daily pressures may all contribute to a person’s overall stress load.

By learning how chronic stress may affect the mind, emotions, nervous system, and physical well-being, we can develop a deeper understanding of our own wellness experiences. This knowledge may also help us support the well-being of our children and families.

Through education and practical wellness strategies, we can begin to identify unnecessary stressors, support recovery, and create healthier lifestyle patterns for ourselves and the people we care about.

Learn more about chronic stress, recognize the stressors in your life, and discover practical ways to support greater balance and well-being.

Could Chronic Stress Be Affecting More Than You Realize?

Chronic stress is increasingly recognized as a significant factor affecting overall well-being and is sometimes described as an epidemic. According to Deborah Morrison’s Get a Grip on Stress, “70–80% of all doctor visits are for stress-related illnesses, and stress contributes to 50% of all illnesses.”

Stress can influence our physical, mental, and emotional well-being. While a life without stress is unrealistic, ongoing stress without enough time for recovery may affect how we feel, think, behave, and function each day.

Stress may appear as fatigue, brain fog, digestive concerns, changes in appetite, sleep difficulties, emotional strain, skin concerns, hormonal changes, or other wellness challenges. Because the body functions as an interconnected system, the source of a concern may not always be obvious.

“What Is Chronic Stress?” Educational Workshop

I created this two-hour educational workshop to help you better understand chronic stress from a functional, whole-person perspective. By connecting the body, mind, emotions, lifestyle, and environment, the workshop explores how various forms of stress may influence overall health and well-being.
